It was during 18th century that our love-affair with the garden began, and methods were devised early to make amends for the British weather.

The Orangery came first, where orange and lemon trees were grown, and young seedlings were cultured ready for the English gardens of the mid 18th century, but this warm and quiet retreat was soon recognized as too good for mere plants, however exotic. So the development of the conservatory began.
