Template - Front page: DIY Conservatory Roof Insulation: Pros and Cons You Need to Know

When it comes to improving the energy efficiency and comfort of your conservatory, roof insulation is a key factor. Whether you’re looking to tackle the project yourself or hire professionals, understanding the pros and cons of each option will help you make the right choice for your home. Here’s an in-depth look at the benefits and challenges of DIY conservatory roof insulation, why professional installation might be a better solution, and how SecuraHome can help.

The Case for DIY Conservatory Roof Insulation

Taking on conservatory roof insulation as a DIY project has its appeal. It promises flexibility, learning opportunities, and potential cost savings. Here’s a breakdown of the most significant pros and cons.

Pros of DIY

Flexibility

When you choose DIY, there’s no pressure to finish within a tight deadline. It allows you to work at your own pace, whether that’s over a few weekends or evenings. You can take your time to figure out the best materials and approaches for your needs.

Satisfaction and Experience

Completing a DIY project brings a sense of achievement. You gain hands-on experience and valuable skills while personally contributing to your home improvement. Each layer of insulation you install is a step towards a more comfortable and efficient conservatory.

Initial Cost Savings

DIY insulation can save you substantial labour costs. Purchasing materials and doing the installation yourself often appears to be the most budget-friendly approach.

Cons of DIY

Time-Consuming

One of the biggest drawbacks of attempting conservatory roof insulation on your own is the time it takes. Researching materials, learning installation techniques, and completing the work can stretch over weeks, especially if this isn’t your area of expertise.

Skill and Knowledge Requirements

Properly insulating conservatory roofs demands a sound understanding of construction and insulation materials. Mistakes can lead to poor insulation, condensation problems, or even structural damage, which can be costly to fix later.

Safety Concerns

Installing insulation on a roof comes with risks. A lack of experience with tools or working at height can result in falls or injuries. Ensuring you have the correct safety equipment and precautions in place is essential but challenging for many DIYers.

The Case for Hiring a Professional

For homeowners who prefer a reliable, efficient solution, hiring a professional is often the best option. SecuraHome offers expert services tailored to your conservatory type and needs. Here are a few reasons why professional installation might be worth the investment.

Expertise and Quality

Professionals have the skills and experience to handle insulation projects with precision. They recommend the best materials for your conservatory roof and ensure installation is seamless. This not only maximises energy efficiency but also prevents long-term issues like condensation and structural instability.

Time Efficiency

With experts like SecuraHome on the job, most conservatory roof insulation projects are completed within a day. You avoid the hassle and lengthy timelines DIY projects often bring, letting you enjoy your cosy new space much sooner.

SecuraHome’s professional installations come with guarantees, offering homeowners peace of mind. If issues arise, you’re covered, and repairs won’t leave you out of pocket.

Types of Conservatory Roofs

Conservatories come in a variety of designs, and the type of roof plays a significant role in insulation effectiveness. Here are some of the most common types of conservatory roofs to consider when planning insulation.

  • Glass Roofs: Offering plenty of natural sunlight, glass roofs are popular. However, they tend to lose heat in winter and overheat in the summer, which makes insulation essential.
  • Polycarbonate Roofs: These lightweight roofs are a budget-friendly option but often lack insulation, leading to uncomfortable temperature fluctuations.
  • Tiled Roofs: Known for their durability and flexibility, tiled roofs provide excellent insulation and are ideal for converting a conservatory into a year-round, comfortable space.

Choosing the Right Roof Based on Conservatory Type

The right roof and insulating materials should complement the design and use of your conservatory. For example, a glass conservatory benefits from reflective foil insulation, which retains heat during the colder months. On the other hand, polycarbonate roofs work well with foam boards to enhance their thermal performance.

While there are several DIY options available, it’s easy to miss small yet critical elements like accurate measurements and proper sealing. Hiring experts ensures the insulation matches your conservatory type, offering maximum comfort and energy savings.

Template - Front page: iPad gift helps Garth Olwg gear up for fundraiser

Ysgol Gyfun Garth Olwg students have taken delivery of an early Christmas present as part of a local business’ scheme to invest in IT for schools. Securahome is giving away iPads to schools across Wales as part of its 20th anniversary celebrations. The tablet computer was presented to head teacher of the Church Village school Mrs Williams, who explained that it would be used as a festive fundraiser. Mrs Williams said: “We were delighted to be able to use the iPad as the star prize in the Christmas raffle. All proceeds will go towards the school’s recent very successful production of ‘Hairspray’.” Securahome, which specialises in the installation of orangeries, conservatories, windows and doors, launched its iPads for Schools scheme to mark its two-decades of business. The company’s MD Jason Jenkins said: “This is the first iPad for Schools donation we’ve made in RCT, and we have to thank our customer Sara Thomas for making it possible. We are pleased to be able to help Ysgol Gyfun Garth Olwg and hope that everyone will dig deep for their fundraiser to support this excellent school.” Under the scheme, Securahome customers who are making an enquiry or referral can nominate a school to receive an iPad. In this case the nomination came from Securahome customer Sara Thomas of Church Village. Mrs Thomas said: “We were really pleased to find out that Securahome offered this scheme. It really is an excellent way of giving something back to the community and their customers.” To nominate a school go to www.securahome.co.uk/contact. Cowbridge Comprehensive School students have taken delivery of a brand new iPad as part of a local business’ scheme to invest in IT for schools.

Securahome, which has showrooms in Ewenny Garden Centre Bridgend and Gorseinon, Swansea, is giving away iPads to schools across Wales as part of its 20th anniversary celebrations.

The iPad was presented to assistant head Jonathan Ling, who explained the how tablet computers are used to aid learning in the school.

“iPads are used across the curriculum, for subjects from English through to Chemistry,” he said. “We have subject specific, educational apps on them as well as books for children to read in the iLibrary, teachers also use them to write their subject blogs, so this donation will get good use!”

Securahome, which specialises in the installation of orangeries, conservatories, windows and doors, launched the scheme to mark its two-decades of business.

The company’s MD Jason Jenkins said: “We’ve had a large number of referrals and recommendations from customers over our 20 years in business and so wanted to give something back to say ‘thank you’.

“As a father I know how important and useful IT is for learning, so donating iPads to schools seemed to be a natural way of giving something back to the community that has supported us so well.”

Under the scheme, customers who are making an enquiry or referral can nominate a school to receive an iPad. Each month, Securahome will hold a draw of the names submitted, with the winner receiving an iPad.

Mr Ling added: “We are very pleased to be supporting this scheme, it is good to see a local business invest in the community in this way.”

The scheme was also commended by Gowerton AM and Minister for Science, Enterprise and Transport Edwina Hart at its launch earlier this month.

Mrs Hart said: “Good companies accept their corporate social responsibility, and it’s wonderful to see someone who has built a successful business from scratch take this seriously and give something back to the community.”

Template - Front page: Fundraisers step up a gear for Felix

Securahome’s charity cycle ride has helped a campaign to fund therapy for a disabled youngster campaign step up a gear. Five months after a skydive that attracted £5,000 for the Go Felix campaign, staff from Securahome jumped into the saddle to raise a further £1,000 for the fund.

The money will go towards therapy and equipment for three-year-old Felix Forbes who has a rare condition called Lissencephaly and Miller-Dieker Syndrome. The life-limiting condition means Felix, whose family are from Swansea, has difficulty swallowing food and even holding up his head.

MD of Gorseinon-based Securahome Jason Jenkins, 45, said: “At the start of the year we asked people, through social media, for suggestions of local charities that needed our support. The Go Felix campaign was the cause that had the most nominations. “Having met the Forbes family, we knew we had to help in anyway we could.” The Securahome team rode 50 miles earlier this month to raise the sponsorship money, starting at Dryslwyn Castle before moving on to Kidwelly, Loughor and finishing in Oystermouth.

While they were raising money, the team collectively lost pounds in a different way – 140 to be exact, the equivalent of 10 stones in weight, thanks to an intensive training schedule in preparation for the 50-mile ride.

“The team put in hours of training to be fit enough to take on the ride,” Jason said. “Our design consultant Leighton lost four stones, while marketing contractor Tony lost five and a half stones. Along with raising money it’s been a tremendous boost for their health.”

Felix’s mother Alex said that the money raised would make a real difference to Felix. She said: “I want to say thank you to everyone who donated money, I’m speechless that so many people could be so kind. “We need lots of sensory equipment to help Felix achieve his potential and donations like these help him move closer to that goal.”

Felix’s condition means that he is not expected to survive beyond childhood and his parents hope to raise £50,000 to pay for specialist equipment and therapy sessions.

The condition has a major impact on him in several ways, including an inability to swallow food or hold his head up. His family are raising money to help improve Felix’s quality of life.
